My goal is to live with integrity and to have left my corner of the world a little better after I'm gone. Life can change in an instant (job loss, illness, etc.) so I do my best and go where the road leads. John Lennon was right, "Life is what happens to you when you're busy making other plans." A few of my likes are worth mentioning: 1) Something that truly makes you laugh (when you can't help yourself); 2) A warm, fresh doughnut; 3) Hiking a silent forest with only the wind in the trees, holding the hand of someone special; 4) Learning something new and fascinating; 5) A hot grilled cheese sandwich on a cold winter day; 5) Sharing a beautiful sunset, rising harvest moon, or star-filled sky with your one-and-only; 6) A lingering kiss full of unspoken meaning that makes time stand still; and 7) A night of passion that leaves you breathless and spent, yet wanting more. More common pursuits include hiking, biking, gardening, golfing, photography, and seeing new sights (particularly those nearby you never see because...well...they're nearby). Some things I've learned along the way: 1) Spark, chemistry, what have you...it has to be there, but it's not everything. You can't start a fire without a spark, but you need more to sustain it; 2) Beware the person who sees you as the gateway to a happier life (you'll never measure up); 3) Falling in love is a powerful emotion, but avoid making your first feelings the ultimate measure of your relationship; 4) If you seek honesty and communication, make it safe for others to speak without fear of reprisal; 5) Compromise when you can, but if you cannot without keeping score, don't (it will consume your relationship from the inside); 6) Avoid expectations. Unmet expectations, no matter how unreasonable, have doomed many relationships unnecessarily; 7) Communicate openly, but remember sometimes everything to be said can be found in a look, a kiss, a caress; 8) You will feel love only to the degree you expose yourself to loss.
